In the finest Bavarian beer hall tradition, a friendly fraulein welcomed Oktoberfest attendees.

Despite severe weather brought by Hurricane Isaias pummeling the region at the start of the weekend, nearly ideal weather Sunday, Oct. 11 gave a boost to Tallahassee's annual Oktoberfest hosted by Elder Care Services of the Big Bend. Happy festival-goers gathered all afternoon on the big outdoor patio of the AC Marriott Hotel at Cascades Park.

Mild temperatures, sunshine and a refreshing breeze persuaded Oktoberfest organizers to move the event outdoors. Around a dozen brewers kept the refreshment coming and more than a few attendees were appropriately attired in lederhosen and dirndl. Elder Care Services Executive Director Josie Fliger was pleased with the turnout.

"We're hoping to clear over $60,000 this year, and again this will help us make sure that even more seniors are taken care of in this area," Fliger said.

Helping the organization near that goal were attendees like Steve Birtman. He happens to be the president of the Capital Tiger Bay Club.

"It's Oktoberfest! It's a little day-drinking on a Sunday. It's a good day," Birtman said.

The organization's service area grew to encompass a total of six North Florida counties earlier this year.
